An Ode to Jack Bauer

24 season 7 trailer

Ok, not so much an ode, but a plea. A moment of begging if you will.

Please stop sucking.

Ok, I know you have been through a lot. I mean any normal man would have gone completely nuts and wiped out all of CTU and then preceded to shoot themselves in the face. But you aren’t just any normal man. You are Jack Bauer, and that’s why we love you.

How do you top shooting ex-President Palmer in the neck, subsequently killing him? How do you top the chase and eventual show down between freaking Robocop and Jack Bauer? The writers thought they had it. They thought that the nuke could pull it all in - give us something new to fear and pray to the gods that mighty Jack will save us all once again - but I guess they underestimated how long our attention spans really are. Somewhere between Jacks weird faced nephew and and the awkward killing of Curtis, (Black Jack as you may want to call him) the show seemed to jump the shark. The show deviated from its normal peaks and valleys (we will ignore season 5’s non stop I think I am having a freaking heart attack suspense) and seemed to go with a more… flat lined approach. Even the Wayne Palmer story arc was a waste. I mean how predictable can you get? I bet no one saw the setup of a known terrorist in order to pass blame.

This season we see the return of the dead. Apparently Tony Almeada faked his death - and has now become EVIL TONY! With a page out of Die Hard 4, we have some cyber terrorism going on - and its up to Jack and Chloe to stop it.

Please hold as I recover from my dizzy head.

Ok. The writers claim they are bringing the good ole days back to ‘24′ - I say the proof is in the pudding. Will I be there for the premier? You betcha, but I’ll be damned if I’ll take another 6 or 7 seasons of last year. Get it together people, or next thing you know we are going to see Jack in a casket - 3 year deal or not.

The WGA strike could give us 24 fans some trouble, as it could mean delays for the season. Maureen Ryan recently spoke to FOX and 24 executive producer David Fury, about the likelihood of 24 being delayed if a strike occurs. FOX is playing it safe, simply saying that, “We’re hoping that all parties can come to an agreement and a strike can be averted. However, in the event one does occur, we’re prepared.”

David Fury gave a little more detail. His comments to Ryan are below,

Fury said that if the writers work past their contract date, as some think might happen if progress is made in negotiations, Jack Bauer may indeed return in January. “As of right now, I think Fox will premiere ‘24’ as scheduled,” Fury said, but he noted that “it really depends on if and when the writers are called to walk out. If the strike does hit on Nov. 1, it certainly makes sense for Fox to delay the start, even if the lack of new programming hurts their bottom line.”

The last writers strike occurred in 1988 and lasted 5 months.

Manhunt 2 Out Tomorrow

Ever since hearing about Rockstar’s Manhunt 2 earlier this year, the gamers in all of us have been curious as to what could have shocked the ESRB so much that they gave the original version an “Adults Only” rating.  While most of us will never have the pleasure of playing that uncut version (unless we import it from the Netherlands or find it on a P2P program), we can take solace in knowing that the still ultra-violent “Mature” rated version will be in stores tomorrow.

Before the scheduled release date last summer, Rockstar was forced to hold off and rework some gaming aspects in order to please the ESRB and England’s BBFC.  They were particularly concerned with the realistic executions the gamer conducted throughout the whole game, including one where a hunter’s testicles were removed with a pair of pliers.  Thus, Rockstar removed that scene and changed the way executions are viewed.  The screen now becomes somewhat blurry with movement so you cannot see exactly what is going on.

What bothers me is that adults are not allowed to purchase the unedited version of the game on any format anywhere.  Shouldn’t a 25 year old such as myself be able to decide if he wants to give this game a try?  Isn’t this taking censorship a little too far?  I understand that this is definitely not for children to play/view/be around whatsoever, but why can’t there be two versions available to the of-age public?  Isn’t there a way Rockstar could offer the unrated game online where the player must verify age somehow (and not through a stupid drop down option like most sites)?  It’s times like these in our society that really piss me off.

Will I still purchase the game?  Most likely.  But I’ll pay for it while shaking my fist!

To see an example of an execution in the edited version, check out the video after the jump.

Green Lantern and Flash movies get directors

All this Superhero movie talk has got me as giddy as a school girl. DC is striking while the proverbial iron is hot - Looking to ride the predicted success of the upcoming Justice league movie, 2 more Hero movies have given the go ahead. Greg Berlanti (The Broken Hearts Club) has signed on to direct a live-action big screen adaptation of The Green Lantern, while Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus director David Dobkin has signed on with Warner Bros to direct The Flash.

Both fims will be set in the Justice League universe, which leads some to believe that Singer’s Superman sequel will be sidelined in favor of a JLA universe Superman film. I’m not even entirely sure that that is a bad thing either.

Dobkin told MTV that his Flash movie will be set in the same universe as the Justice League of America movie, and will follow the Wally West incarnation of the character. Both Wally West and Barry Allen are said to be featured in the film, which coincides with rumors that the movie will open with Barry Allen’s funeral. Asked about his vision for the Flash, Dobkin teased a somewhat melancholy tagline: “You can’t outrun yourself.”

Variety sheds some light on how Berlanti may have earned this gig:

“Guggenheim, who works with Berlanti as a writer-producer on Brothers & Sisters wrote the Marvel comicbooks ‘Amazing Spider-Man’, ‘Wolverine’ and ‘Blade’. Green, the Heroes co-exec producer who worked with Berlanti on Everwood and Jack & Bobby, wrote the Marvel Comics title ‘Superman/Batman’ and was a writer-producer on Smallville.”

The Hollywood Reporter has the following quote from Greg:

“To me, this was on the last great comic book movie that hasn’t been made,” said Berlanti, who grew up reading comics in the 1980s. “It was a comic book with a real mythology that you would see in a lot of the space operas and the sci-fi books. The best part about it, anybody can be become one of the Green Lanterns because anyone can end up with that ring.” “The danger and the fear from a lot of people is that it would be silly. In these post-’Harry Potter’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ days, it’s not any more fantastical than that. It’s taken movies like that to make it feel as if a Green Lantern film is possible.”
